Paragraph is a
collection of sentences that relate to one topic. The reason of learning to
write a good paragraph is to make the writer keep on the rule or stay on the
topic that being discussed. A good paragraph will make the reader following the
writer’s purpose. An effective pharagraph should contain of four main characteristics,
they are: a topic sentence, unity, coherence, and adequate. A short
explaination of each characteristic will be discussed bellow.
Topic Sentence
The function of
topic sentence is to describe what the paragraph is going to talk about. A
paragraph will be easy to understand if it is begun by a topic sentence, then
followed by supporting sentences.
Unity
A good paragraph
should be focused on one idea. All the supporting sentences should refer to the
topic sentence as the main idea. If the writer has a different idea to be
discussed, it must be written in another paragraph.
Coherence
Coherence is the
characteristic that makes a paragraph easy to understand by the reader. To
achieve coherence, the writer should make all of the ideas in a paragraph are
relevant to the main topic.
Adequate
Adequate means that
the main topic should be discussed in detail. In a good paragraph, a topic
sentence should be developed by adequate supporting sentences. It is varies
from each paragraph, but it will be better if the writer has at least four
supporting sentences.
Those are the four
main characteristics of an effective paragraph. Here are the simple ways to write paragraph with adequate and unity:
- Decide the topic you want to discusse.
- Make a topic sentence as the beginning of the paragraph.
- Develope the topic sentence in detil by at least four supporting sentences (depend on the topic that being discussed).
- Make sure that all of the supporting sentences are refer to the topic sentence.
- Ignore all the ideas that are not relevant to the topic being discussed.
